Toco is on the north eastern part of Trinidad, approximately 2 hours drive from Port of Spain. The area generally called the Toco region stretches from Matura to Matelot and comprises of several small villages. It is an area of rich forests with crystal clear rivers meeting the sea and several small waterfalls. Among the many rivers in the area are the Matelot, Grande Riverie, Shark, Balandra, Tompei and Salibea. These rivers give rise to various waterfalls which include the Rio Seco, Rampanalgas and Matelot. The presence of these rivers and waterfalls means that hiking for river exploration and to vist the waterfalls is a favorite outdoor activity. With a coastline that varies from rugged headlands to wide bays to small coves, fishing is a favorite recreational past time. You can fish from the beach or from one of the promontories or hire a local fisherman to take you out in a boat. The Toco region is the best area in Trinidad to view the nesting of the leatherback sea turtle with nesting sites at Matura, Rincon and Grande Riviere. With an almost untouched natural environment, numerous bird species are easily seen throughout the entire region.
